What is Cultured Mountain Ginseng Root ?

Mountain ginseng is a plant that belongs to the Aralliacea and Panax. The scientific name is Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. The Greek word "Panax" a compound word for treating all illnesses, as the word “Pan” is "everything" and “Axos” is “healing, medicine". Since ancient times, ginseng has been treated as a supernatural or marvelous medicine and is sold at a very high price. You can imagine the medical status of wild ginseng in the past when medical technology was not developed. The cloning of somatic cells of wild ginseng, which was started at Chungbuk University in 1998, was created in Korea as a food product through the Korea Food and Drug Administration's safety verification in 2003.

To verify the efficacy of cultured mountain ginseng root, numerous joint experiments have been conducted since 2003 linked to famous colleges of medicine and pharmacy in Korea to prove that cultured wild ginseng root is more effective than ordinary ginseng. The efficacy may be only in the cultured mountain ginseng root with the high content of components(ginsenoside, acidic polysaccharide, etc.), for which the incubation technique are proven.

Existing Action Task
  • Development of food for improving memory capacity using cultured mountain ginseng root (Ministry of Health and Welfare)
  • Development of products with enhanced acidic polysaccharide composition (Chungbuk Techno Park)
  • Development of products for enhancing children's immunity (Ministry of Knowledge Economy)
  • Development of drinks to help improve physical strength, memory and learning ability (Chungbuk Techno Park)
  • Development of functional substances for improving blood flow using cultured mountain ginseng root (Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine)
  • Development of food for elderly patients using cultured mountain ginseng root (Chungbuk Techno Park)

Comparison of Ginsenoside Content
Crude saponin content in the mountain ginseng and the cultivated ginseng was 4~6%, while that in the cultured mountain ginseng was 6~8%. HPLC analysis showed more specific peaks in the cultured mountain ginseng compared to cultivated ginseng.
The cultured mountain ginseng had higher saponin content than ginseng or red ginseng.
